The European Parliament urged France and other European states on Thursday “immediately to suspend all expulsions of Roma.” The resolution was nonbinding but stung French officials. Immigration Minister Eric Besson, left, in Bucharest for talks with Romanian authorities, said it was “out of the question” for France to suspend the deportations of foreigners who had stayed beyond their visas. “The European Parliament has exceeded its prerogatives, and we are certainly not going to comply with a political diktat,” Mr. Besson said. France has been asking Romania and Bulgaria to do more to integrate their Roma populations using European aid money. Also in Bucharest, European Minister Pierre Lellouche said that “France will call for commitments on police and judiciary cooperation, the fight against human trafficking and integration of Roma in Romania, as part of a national emergency plan spanning 2010-2013.”
